In a groundbreaking initiative aimed at enhancing public health and safety, the Rotary Club of Kuching Central (RCKC), Rotary Club of Singapore East, and the Council of the City of Kuching South (MBKS) have embarked on a collaborative pilot project under the “Heart Safe City Kuching” initiative.
This Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed on December 3, 2024, marks a significant step towards establishing Kuching as a model for cardiovascular emergency preparedness.
The pilot project involves the installation of five Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) at high-traffic locations such as Friendship Park, Stutong Market, Kenyalang Market, MBKS Headquarters, and the Indoor Stadium, all within MBKS’s jurisdiction. These devices, essential for emergency response during cardiac arrests, are expected to play a critical role in saving lives. The initiative is complemented by comprehensive training sessions on the proper use of AEDs and basic life-saving techniques, targeting both community members and MBKS staff stationed at AED-equipped locations.
Through “Heart Safe City Kuching,” RCKC, with support from the Rotary Club of Singapore East, will spearhead the procurement and donation of the AED units. Concurrently, MBKS will ensure seamless integration by obtaining necessary approvals, overseeing installation, and managing routine maintenance. Public workshops and awareness campaigns will also be conducted to foster a culture of health consciousness and emergency readiness.
While this is the initial phase, the project’s long-term vision extends beyond the pilot. “Heart Safe City Kuching” aims to identify additional strategic locations across Kuching for future installations. By doing so, they hope to expand coverage and impact, ensuring greater access to life-saving equipment and education for the city’s residents.
The partnership underscores a shared commitment to transforming Kuching into a safer, healthier city. Regular monitoring and evaluations will guide future efforts, with a focus on optimizing functionality, public response, and training outcomes. The success of this pilot will not only set a precedent for similar projects but also strengthen the city’s capacity to address cardiovascular emergencies effectively.
This initiative reflects the spirit of collaboration between the Rotary Club of Kuching Central, Rotary Club of Singapore East, and the Council of the City of Kuching South, aligning with Kuching’s vision of community-driven progress. As a pioneer project, it paves the way for a safer future, highlighting the power of strategic partnerships in addressing public health challenges.
