KUCHING: Pupils of SK Nanga Klassen are now able to go to school a little easier having received help from the Rotary Club of Kuching Central.

The club, Sri Aman Deputy Resident Des-mond Jerukan, and the state Education Department, have donated 20 bicycles to deserving pupils, and also provided deworming services and eye-screening tests for over 130 of them.

Rotarians, who were alerted to the plight of the pupils who had to walk long distances daily to school, were quick to offer their assistance.

SK Nanga Klassen is on the way to Engkilili, about 20km from Sri Aman.

The school has a total of 130 pupils, of whom 80% are boarders, while the rest live in nearby villages.

Speaking at a ceremony, Service Projects Committee chairman Alan Poh said: “Rotary’s focus on the younger generation is the key to nurturing an abundance of potential leaders of the future who will take over as our nation progresses.”

The 20 bicycles worth RM150 each were handed over by Poh to the headmaster Masan David Renang in the presence of visiting Rotary governor Zainie Abdul Aucasa from Kota Kinabalu, Rotary president Juergen Ertl, Desmond, past president Chieng Lee Ching, the school’s senior assistants Terry Ringgit and Nur Farhana.

Subsequently, a letter of intent was also handed over for the deworming and eye-screening tests which will be done at the school before the end of this month.

“I am very pleased that the Rotary Club of Kuching Central has been given this wonderful opportunity to do good for the local community.

“I thank past president Chieng for his commendable efforts in laying the ground work for this project,” said Ertl.

Zainie, who is visiting the various Rotary clubs around the country, also praised the Rotary Club of Kuching Central for its efforts, saying: “The club’s initiative in donating the bicycles is an excellent public relations exercise, which will benefit not only the club but also those in need.”
